Antarctica - Dec 10th

Antarctica – Sunday, December 10th

We were supposed to have gone to Brown Bluff today.  The weather there, we are told, is pretty rotten.  Instead we traveled to Cierva Cove.  The temperature today is hovering right below freezing.  The water is choppy with some mild ground swells.  This makes for an exciting zodiac ride and if you are sitting in the front, which I was, you get wet with a lot of spray.  The choppy conditions also made getting into and out of the zodiac a little more exciting.

There is another unused research station here.  It gets used more during the Antarctic summer, which is another month or two away.  For now there are a few penguins hanging around.

After we returned to the ship we treated ourselves to breakfast number two as it was still not yet nine o’clock.

We have spent most of our idle time in one of the lounges.  While spending most of the morning writing this blog one of the iceberbs hs moved in front of another iceberg.  Then, when we weren’t watching it calved, meaning some of it broke away.  Where we didn’t actually see it, I have before and after photos.  The part that broke away is floating in the sea next to its parent iceberg.  The parent iceberg has now revealed a nice blue hue.

We will spend the rest of the day reading and relaxing.  And then there is eating.  We are having fish and chips for lunch.  Tomorrow we are supposed to visit the Antarctic Sound.  We’ll hope the weather holds.

Tomorrow will be another adventure.
