Antarctica - Dec 7

Antarctica – Thursday, December 7th

Today was a fairly low key day.  We were supposed to go to Chiriguano Bay.  However the weather around that location was less than ideal so instead we sailed to Melchior Islands.  Melchior Islands are best known for a scientific research center sponsored by the Argentine government.  This research center was known for their cutting edge technology and findings.  Unfortunately, due to economic downturns in Argentina the funding for this research center was withdrawn.  The buildings still remain, but they are not used and sit empty.

The weather today was once again sunny.  The high temperature hovered right around freezing.  We are expecting light snow tonight with sun and clouds tomorrow.

We went on another zodiac ride today.  The seas were calm so we were able to complete the ride without getting wet.  In fact, it was so nice we were able to peel off various articles of clothing, such as gloves and neck gaiters.

We met Dave and Bob Penguins previously.  Today we got to wave hello to three lady penguins, Matilda, Bernice, and Gertrude.  They all waved hello back to us.

Not to be outdone we also saw Bruce the seal.  Bruce was said to be a crabeater seal.  We are not certain of this as we didn’t get close enough to look at his teeth.  We took the guide’s word for it.

We were also visited by more humpback whales.  As they dove they waved at us with their flukes.  We waved back as soon as we finished taking pictures.

Late in the evening we visited the ‘warm pool’, which was about ten feet wide and thirty feet long, like a giant bathtub.  It was nice and relaxing.  We had the entire pool mostly to ourselves.

Tomorrow we are supposed to go to Danco Island.  We’ll see if the weather cooperates.  Regardless…

Tomorrow will be another adventure.
