Austrailia - Mar 16 - Sydney

Mar 16 - Sydney

POL:
Our first day in Sydney and we need to get our bearings and a flavor of the city.  So we took a hop on hop off bus called the Big Bus.  There were two routes for the big bus.  The red line took the passengers mostly around the downtown area, the wharfs (by the way, WHARF is an acronym for ware house at river front)(I was paying attention), the opera house, and the harbor bridge.  Like many other cities in Austrailia there is a definate blend of the new buildings and the old buildings.  There were still a few from the 1800's, quite a few from the 1900's, and of course many newer buildings.  The focal points of the city still remain the Harbor Bridge and the Opera House.

One building that caught my eye had a gridwork of plants growing on the outside of the building.  The plants are watered by rainwater that is captured by the plants.  There are a number of panels on the roof that deflect sunlight to specific areas high on the building so those plants that would normally be in the shade for too much of the day can be bathed in sunlight as well.  It was interesting, but also reminded me of so many apocolypse movies we had seen.
